Scanning Tips

  • When scanning images, it is important to do so with the end result in mind.
  • For example, images created for the web will reproduce poorly when used in print since the resolution is too low. A computer screen is only capable of reading 72 dpi, whereas printing requires a much higher resolution.
  • A problem also arises if you reverse the situation. When print-quality images are used on the web, the large files greatly increase your web page download time.
  • Below are some guidelines for scanning and taking digital photos:
  • Black & White Photos that will be reproduced in print should be scanned at 133 lpi or 300 dpi, and saved as a TIFF file.
  • Color Photos for Print should be scanned at 225 lpi or 450 dpi, saved as an EPS file in CMYK format.
  • Color Photos for Web/Screen should be scanned at 72 dpi. These images should be scanned in RGB format and saved as JPEG or GIF files. Gif files should be used if you desire any white space to become transparent when shown on the web.
  • Line Art should be crisp & clear, scanned at 1200 dpi for print and saved in TIFF or BMP format.
  • Also, Keep in Mind: Once artwork has become electronic, it CAN be reduced without loss of quality. The artwork CANNOT be enlarged without loss of quality. For BEST quality images for use in print, request original artwork rather than electronic.
